In the year 4196, the population was experiencing explosive growth, and
the only possibility for survival was to travel to a new galaxy and
settle new planets, which had a fertile environment. It was not an easy
venture; after all, both the means and the resources for such a huge
undertaking were lacking!
In this period, individual countries, as they had been known in the
past, no longer existed. After the huge collapse of 2159, when a
full-scale war had almost wiped out the entire population of the planet,
even the last and most fervent imperialists had realized that things
could not go on this way. Finally, many years after reconstruction was
completed, technologies were developed to cultivate the surrounding
planets in the solar system and make them livable. This, of course,
resulted in a much more peaceful human race. Finally, there was enough
room and enough wealth to go around, there was nothing really worth
fighting for. Each planet had its own regions and they, in turn, had
their own federations; and all of them belonged to one single sovereign
supraplanetary confederation, whose job it was to make certain that
everyone was happy and content. This confederation called itself Xenon
Net, and it had been founded by the largest computer and high-tech
companies in the world, the Xenon Industries Group. Collaboration
between the Federation Councils and the high-tech companies enabled
Xenon Net, which was a huge network, to handle the entire administration
of all business and politics because of advances in artificial
intelligence.
In the beginning, it was perhaps not such a pleasant time for civilians;
after all, the idea of the Network as the largest unit of all the
federations was often viewed with suspicion. But when the project was
finally finished and people saw how much work and how much luxury the
Network created for them, revolts became rare.
But it came as it had to come. Slowly the resources that were available
were used up, the population exploded (on one hand, because of medical
advances and on the other, because the strict controls of the Network
were disobeyed), and discontent began to spread. Since the Network had
not been up to its task, one of the largest committees of its time was
organized. All the councils of the all federations came together.
Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of possibilities. The only thing that
they knew for certain was that they had to get out of here and travel to
a new galaxy to settle new planets and spread their population out. But
how would it be possible to finance such an enormous project? And how
will these new planets be assigned or awarded so that the entire venture
would not deteriorate into a materialistic war? After all, it would be
completely unfair to allow only the richest members of the federations
to make their way to the new galaxy. So it took more than half a decade
to finally find a way to finance the S.C.O.S. project (Systematic
Colonization of Space) that would guarantee a fair allocation of land
and resources.
They organized the largest tournament that the universe had ever seen.
The federations of each planet were pooled to a single team that would
be participating in this tournament. The sole goal of this tournament
was to win. It was really quite simple; they built spaceships that
competed against each other in huge arenas. Naturally not to the death,
but until there was a definitive winner. The winners were awarded
points, and more points a federation got, the more regions in the new
galaxy it could lay claim to. At the start, each federation received the
same financial means and other resources from the Network so that
everyone's chances were equal. This venture opened up a completely new
industry and suddenly, both normal working hours and leisure time were
spent only on this tournament. Industry and research facilities were
geared almost exclusively toward the development of modern and better
technologies and new space battleships. All of this was financed largely
by the federations themselves so that this resulted in extensive
commercial trading and collaboration between the individual federations
and planets. And with the revenues from the tournament, Xenon Net could
begin to prepare the new galaxy for the human race...
Currently, the entire tournament is being controlled and monitored by
Xenon Net. One could almost say that a new sport has been born, which
will not just be used as a leisure time activity but will serve
mankind's entire future.
It will ensure that there are no disputes about the new planets in the
new galaxy.
The less affluent federations have the opportunity for great
achievements here, and their hidden talents and fighting spirit often
make them the strongest opponents. And ultimately, everyone profits from
this because why shouldn't one fight legally for something that is worth
fighting for?
Of course, there are still people who doubt the success of this venture
and consider it to be a crazy idea and a waste of important resources.
But, after all, not everyone has to participate in this tournament,
since a federation often has several million people. And while some will
continue to disagree with this venture, most people cannot understand
how anyone could be so narrow-minded about it and not see it as a unique
opportunity for a new beginning in a new galaxy!
